Intercultural Life at BAU Campus with Students from 116 Countries: The International Day Experience

BAU Campus offered a colourful experience bringing together the culture, story, and sense of representation of students from 116 countries in the same campus atmosphere with the International Day event. The event, held at Bahçeşehir University Beşiktaş Campus, turned into a special gathering where students actively participated in campus life with their countries' flags, traditional clothing, local tastes, and stage performances. For BAU Campus, this event stood out as an important campus tradition where international students feel visible, share their cultures, and form a strong bond of belonging with university life.

The event began with students arriving on the shore by boat and parading with their countries' flags. This parade lent a strong visual identity to the International Day atmosphere. Cultural items, traditional garments, and samples from national cuisines were showcased at the country stalls that were set up. Students took the stage in their national costumes, sang songs, showcased performances, and turned their cultures into a living experience within the BAU Campus environment. This wide student profile, stretching from the Philippines to Uzbekistan, and from Sweden to Palestine, created a multilingual, polyphonic, and participatory environment on campus.

For international students, International Day opens up a strong space of representation during university life spent far from home. Offering cheese with basil and halva at the Uzbekistan stand, preparing pancakes at the North American stand, and serving Russian dumplings, Russian salad, and traditional crepes at the Russian stand demonstrated how cultural sharing is enriched through food, conversation, and stage experience. Including the works of writer, journalist, and poet Ghassan Kanafani alongside cultural items at the Palestine stand added a dimension of literature, memory, and representation to the event. While this diversity gave international students an opportunity to express their own country, it also created a space for domestic students to closely engage with different lifestyles.

Intercultural life is one of the most lasting experiences students acquire during their university years. Being in the same environment as students from different countries improves communication skills, increases empathy, and offers the opportunity to discover different perspectives. BAU Campus does not present the presence of students from 116 countries merely as a numerical diversity; it infuses this diversity into daily campus life, friendships, shared celebrations, and student interaction. When a student shares their cuisine, music, or literary heritage, the campus becomes a warmer, more inclusive, and more participatory environment.

The visit of Enver Yücel, President of the BAU Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr Esra Hatipoğlu, Rector of BAU, members of the board of trustees, and academics to the stands to meet with the students reinforced the place of the event in campus culture. International Day offered an experience where students discovered other cultures while sharing their own identities, eased homesickness, and built bonds within a shared university life. With this event, BAU Campus transformed the concept of intercultural life into a visible, vibrant, and student-centred campus value. This experience left a lasting mark in the social memory of the campus as a strong area of sharing where students create together, celebrate together, and learn from one another.
