2026–2027 Academic Year Opening at BAU: Micro-Credentials and the Educational Vision of the New Era

University life is a period in which students acquire professional knowledge while discovering their interests, taking on responsibility, and shaping their decisions for their future. Therefore, when evaluating the educational experience, it is necessary to look at how students are supported as much as the course content. The opening messages for the 2026–2027 academic year at BAU Campus highlight an approach that addresses student development along with its academic, social, and personal dimensions.

The academic year opening of Bahçeşehir University was held at the South Campus in Beşiktaş. The first lecture of the opening was given by Dr Oonagh McGirr, Founding Director of the World Micro-Credentials Foundation. The presentation, focusing on micro-credentials, brought changing learning needs and how universities can respond to these needs to the agenda. BAU Rector Prof. Dr Esra Hatipoğlu stated that 20 different micro-credential programmes have been made available to all students in Turkey. Supporting the well-being of students alongside their academic progress was also among the issues highlighted at the opening.

How can micro-credentials contribute to student development?

A university student's learning goals may change over time. An area they were not interested in when choosing their department may gain importance through a project they participate in or a problem they encounter. Realising this new need allows the student to participate more consciously in their own educational journey.

It is possible to evaluate the micro-credential approach from this perspective: learning opportunities focusing on a specific competence can help the student define the area they want to develop more clearly. What is important here is not just participating in a new programme. The student needs to think about what skill they want to acquire, why, and where they will use this skill.

For example, a student might realise that they struggle with teamwork. Another might want to present research results in a clear way. These are not examples of the content of BAU programmes, but rather situations showing how personal learning goals can be identified. When choosing a programme, the explained content, participation conditions, and evaluation method should be reviewed separately.

Why is student well-being a part of the educational experience?

A student's adaptation to university should be considered along with their participation in classes, friendships, time management, and seeking support when needed. An understanding of education that centres student development requires paying attention to these daily experiences as well.

For a new student, trying to figure everything out immediately can be exhausting. Discovering interests, participating in different activities, and establishing one's own study routine takes time. Setting realistic goals during this process can make the student's progress more visible.

Personal development is also not measured solely by grand achievements. Expressing an opinion in a discussion, taking responsibility in a collaborative project, or asking for help with a difficult subject are significant steps. The elements that enrich the university experience often emerge in these small but steady progressions.

A conscious start to the new academic year

As they begin the 2026–2027 academic year, students can set personal learning goals alongside their course objectives. Asking "In which subject do I want to progress this semester?" can make choosing programmes and activities easier. Having a concrete goal also makes it possible to evaluate progress at the end of the semester.

For university candidates, the way to understand a student-centred educational approach is to evaluate general promises with concrete questions. How are learning opportunities announced? Where can participation conditions be found? In what ways are student needs met?

The agenda of the new academic year at BAU Campus invites us to consider university education within the student's entire developmental journey. The first step to benefit from this journey can be to examine existing opportunities and connect them with personal goals.
