BAU Opens the 2026-2027 Academic Year with an Inaugural Lecture Focussing on Micro-credentials

Bahçeşehir University held its 2026–2027 Academic Year Opening Ceremony at the BAU South Campus. The first lecture of the new academic year was delivered by Dr Oonagh McGirr, Founding Director of the World Alliance for Microcredentials Foundation. Centred around “Micro-credentials”, the opening prominently featured topics such as the transformation of higher education, future skills, lifelong learning, and preparing students for the evolving world of work.
Speaking at the ceremony, BAU Rector Prof Dr Esra Hatipoğlu stated that the changes occurring in higher education necessitate that universities rethink their educational models. She expressed that Bahçeşehir University does not view this transformation merely as a process preparing students for existing professions, but instead adopts a more holistic educational approach that cultivates the competencies required in the future world of work.
Micro-credential programmes form an essential component of this approach. Prof Dr Hatipoğlu explained that BAU has undertaken a pioneering role in the field of micro-credentials in Turkey, making 20 different micro-credential programmes accessible to all university students across the country. Consequently, the aim is to ensure that micro-credentials do not remain an opportunity solely for BAU students, but reach a broader segment of the higher education ecosystem.
Delivering the traditional “First Lecture” of the academic year, Dr Oonagh McGirr drew attention to how higher education is being reshaped by the impact of artificial intelligence, national policy reforms, and shifting human needs. McGirr emphasised that modern universities must move beyond traditional and linear learning models, noting that micro-credentials provide a flexible framework capable of equipping individuals with new skills at various stages of their careers. She also pointed out that this model can support the portability of acquired competencies across different countries and educational systems.
The student perspective was also incorporated into the opening programme. Şevval Tanrıver, a second-year student in the BAU Department of Psychology and Student Representative, explained that the university experience is shaped not only by academic education but also through communication, taking responsibility, contributing, and personal development. She encouraged new students to maintain their curiosity and to approach the university journey as a process of discovery.
Held at the BAU Campus, the 2026–2027 Academic Year Opening brought micro-credentials to the forefront alongside future educational models. The programme showcased, at the start of the new academic year, Bahçeşehir University’s approach of addressing academic education, lifelong learning, student development, and evolving skill requirements within a unified framework.
