Collaboration Between BAU and the World Micro-Credentials Foundation for Next-Generation Education

Bahçeşehir University and the World Alliance for Microcredentials Foundation have signed a cooperation protocol to develop micro-credentials in higher education and expand their use in alignment with international quality standards. Held at BAU, the Strategic Round Table Meeting and signing ceremony brought to the fore how changing skill needs can be reflected in university education.
The meeting, titled “Micro-Credentials in Higher Education: Reframing the Learning Experience”, was attended by BAU Rector Prof. Dr Esra Hatipoğlu, Director of the World Alliance for Microcredentials Foundation Oonagh McGirr, faculty deans, and directors of vocational schools. The discussions addressed the evolving landscape of higher education, lifelong learning, the relationship between micro-credentials and traditional degree programmes, quality assurance, international recognition, and the transformation of skills accelerated by artificial intelligence.
During the meeting, it was emphasised that micro-credentials represent an educational model capable of helping students develop skills required in specific fields through shorter, more flexible learning processes. Prof. Dr Esra Hatipoğlu stated that they view micro-credentials as a significant layer enabling the educational architecture of higher education to be rethought. She expressed that these programmes can contribute to the swifter acquisition of competencies required by the evolving labour market, their verifiable certification, and their transformation into new learning pathways over time.
Bahçeşehir University does not limit the micro-credential programmes it develops solely to its own students. By making the programmes accessible to students studying at different universities across Türkiye, the aim is to create a broader learning network. This approach is intended to bring academic quality together with the current expectations of the business world within the same educational model.
One of the key agenda items of the meeting was the alignment of micro-credentials with international quality standards. The cooperation between BAU and the World Alliance for Microcredentials Foundation aims to lay the groundwork for joint efforts towards strengthening the reliability, quality, and recognition of this educational model across different countries. At the same time, discussions were held on how micro-credentials can be integrated into existing degree programmes and how more personalised learning pathways can be offered to students.
Following the Strategic Round Table Meeting, the cooperation protocol was signed by Prof. Dr Esra Hatipoğlu and Oonagh McGirr. Under the protocol, joint projects are planned in the fields of micro-credentials, next-generation learning models, and skills-focused education.
Brought to fruition at BAU Campus, this collaboration marks one of the latest steps in responding to the changing needs of higher education with flexible, verifiable educational models aligned with international standards. By addressing micro-credential efforts alongside academic quality, lifelong learning, and future skills, Bahçeşehir University aims to contribute to the development of next-generation educational models.
