Zero Waste Awareness at BAU Port: Sustainable Living Culture at BAU Campus

Within the scope of the Istanbul Zero Waste Week, BAU Campus translated environmental awareness into a field-based expression of campus life with the Bottom Cleansing Waste Collection Dive held at BAU Port. Carried out between 1–7 June 2026 under the auspices of the Governorship of Istanbul and the coordination of the Zero Waste Foundation, the events aimed to popularise a sustainable living culture, strengthen environmental responsibility awareness, and deliver the zero waste philosophy to wider audiences. BAU Campus supported this goal with an application area where students directly participated.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the work carried out at BAU Port was that the dive was conducted using an underwater lighting device manufactured by Bahçeşehir University. This detail demonstrated that the university does not approach environmental efforts merely through awareness, but also integrates its manufacturing, technology, and application strength into the process. The Bottom Cleansing Waste Collection Dive allowed students to witness the waste problem in our seas first-hand and to be part of the solution. This activity on the Bosphorus coast transformed the environmental issue from a topic observed from afar into a living experience that students engaged with through their own efforts.

The waste in the Bosphorus was collected by Bahçeşehir University students, the BUSAK Club, and the Coast Guard Command teams of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Turkey. This joint effort showed that environmental awareness can transform into a stronger impact through team spirit. By acting in line with the same goal as professional teams, students both contributed to nature and directly experienced social responsibility. Participating in such an event is not limited to students merely hearing about environmental issues; it ensures they trace the problem, take steps towards a solution, and understand their own role more clearly.

A sustainable campus life is not strengthened by events where students are only spectators; it becomes permanent through participation, responsibility, and shared effort. BAU Campus established a strong connection between the city, the sea, and the campus by transforming its location on the Bosphorus coast into a meaningful learning space for students. While every piece of waste retrieved from the sea represented a concrete step towards a cleaner environment, it also made the impact of daily choices and collective behaviours on the environment visible to students. For this reason, BAU Port stood out as an important campus landmark that strengthens students' sense of environmental responsibility.

This work, carried out as part of Zero Waste Week, served as a reminder that campus learning can continue outside the classroom. Thanks to an environmental activity in which they directly participated, students found the opportunity to relate sustainability to daily life. At this point, environmental awareness ceased to be a slogan and transformed into an experience that touches the students' behaviours, choices, and contribution to society.

This experience presented a valuable example of how an environmentally conscious understanding of life can develop within the BAU Campus culture. This collaboration at BAU Port took sustainability out of being an abstract concept and transformed it into a campus value that students interacted with, put effort into, and took ownership of. This awareness, which began on campus, created a strong asset that can also be reflected in the students' future lifestyle habits.
