How Do the Boundaries Between Campus and City Dissolve? The City Integration Approach at BAU Campus

The university experience is not only shaped by classrooms, laboratories and academic areas on campus. The relationship that students build with the city they live in also constitutes an important part of daily university life. At BAU Campus, we approach the City Integration concept not as positioning the campus as an educational space disconnected from Istanbul, but as an experience that connects with the city's transport, culture, art, business world and social life opportunities. Our location on the Bosphorus line also forms the physical foundation of this approach.

BAU Campus is located at a central point on the coastline in Beşiktaş. Beşiktaş can be reached by public transport vehicles such as buses, ferries and minibuses; there are also connections from central points such as Kabataş, Taksim and Zincirlikuyu. The BAU Sea Shuttle, which we offer for our students, provides free transport by sea to the campus from piers on the Asian and European sides. These transport options support campus life in connecting with different parts of Istanbul on a daily basis.

In the City Integration approach, the meaning of location is not limited only to making access to the campus easier. Beşiktaş's place in city life creates an environment where our students can connect with culture, art, social life and professional circles. At BAU Campus, we do not separate the university experience from the rhythm of the city; we value learning as a process that starts on campus and continues through contact with different areas of Istanbul.

One of the examples of this relationship is the work carried out around BAU Port. In the marine cleaning event held within the scope of Zero Waste Week, our students participated in an environmental study on the Bosphorus coast. The direct relationship of the campus with the sea has opened up space for the subject of sustainability to be experienced in daily life without being limited to theoretical content. The link between city, coast and campus was thus transformed into a part of the learning environment.

At BAU Campus, we position art and culture areas, living spaces, Hub Spaces, the Convention Center, multi-disciplinary laboratories and different study environments among the components of the campus experience. This structure supports academic studies in meeting social interaction, events and co-production processes in the same environment. Our location in the centre of Istanbul allows the campus experience to continue with different contact points in the city.

For us, City Integration means an approach that links university life with the dynamics of the city, rather than physically expanding the boundaries of the campus. We are developing BAU Campus as a learning and production space that lives together with Istanbul, by creating an environment where our students can establish more natural transitions between lessons, research, events, social life and city experience.
